Nestled in the heart of eastern Bhutan’s fertile agricultural region, Gomphu Kora is a revered spiritual site located just 23 kilometers from Trashigang Dzong, the administrative center of Bhutan’s most populous district. The name “Gomphu Kora” is rich in meaning—Gomphu translates to “meditation cave,” while Kora refers to the act of circumambulation, a key ritual at this sacred location.

At the heart of Gomphu Kora lies a cave formed in a rocky cliffside, which holds deep spiritual significance. A temple built beside this natural feature serves as a place of worship and reflection. The site is best known for its annual circumambulation ritual, which is central to a popular saying: “Circle Gomphu Kora today—tomorrow might be too late.” This phrase reflects the urgency and devotion of the faithful who make their journey here.

Each year, during a three-day religious festival, Gomphu Kora transforms into a vibrant gathering space. Devotees from across eastern Bhutan, adorned in traditional dress, come together to pray, celebrate, and honor their spiritual heritage. The festival’s renown also crosses national borders, drawing members of the Dakpa community from Arunachal Pradesh in India. Despite the challenging terrain, these pilgrims undertake long journeys on foot with their families to be part of the sacred event.
