The Bumdeling Ramsar site hosts the winter roosting area of about 100 endangered species of black-necked cranes that forage in the paddy fields between Zhapang to the north and Chorten Kora to the south. There is a Visitor center/Cafe` near Dungzam with information about the cranes and other conservation issues. The surrounding area is also a good place for winter visiting birds including ibisbills, bar-headed geese and ducks. Other good birding areas include the forest road to Phodrung in Dongde Chu Valley and the main road to Trashi Yangtse between Chumdu and the Old Dzong(Km 34-41).
